Google’s Recent Announcement About Linkbuilding

Google recently published a blog post recently on the (continued) rise of guest posting specifically for links or, as they neatly summed it up, When link building comes first, the quality of the articles can suffer and create a bad experience for users..

Here’s a handy list of things to avoid doing, according to Google:

Below are factors that, when taken to an extreme, can indicate when an article is in violation of these guidelines:

  • Stuffing keyword-rich links to your site in your articles
  • Having the articles published across many different sites; alternatively, having a large number of articles on a few large, different sites
  • Using or hiring article writers that aren’t knowledgeable about the topics they’re writing on
  • Using the same or similar content across these articles; alternatively, duplicating the full content of articles found on your own site (in which case use of rel=”canonical”, in addition to rel=”nofollow”, is advised)

Couple things to keep in mind:

1. They’ve posted about this because this link building tactic works.

2. They are not bluffing: if they catch you doing this, your rankings will suffer.

3. This is not an endorsement, I definitely recommend being very strategic about the risk you take, but they probably will not catch you if you DO do this.


Does Voice Search Have an ROI Yet?

This game is called “voice search, or edible phone?”

Voice search is finally close to actually being the “next big thing.” With the rise of Google Home, Alexa, and Facebook spying on you, voice search is pushing its way to the center stage.

You, a website owner that wants to dominate EVERY facet of a search engine, are probably interested in how voice search impacts your business as these in-home devices (to say nothing of smart phones) become ubiquitous.

So until voice search technologies evolve or you can make money on setting alarms, calling mom, or dictating texts — voice search is more hype than anything. With that, we’ve landed on the following action plan: we’ll keep up on the voice search baseline trends we’ve established while continuing to focus our clients on [potentially] “unsexy,” but ROI driven strategies that nail their 2017 goals.

SeerInteractive wrote a pretty solid post that takes you from “what even is voice search” to what should you do to best take advantage of this… whatever the opposite of fad is. Movement?

I asked Google Assistant, but it wasn’t helpful.

Maybe I’ll try Siri next time…


Google’s Patent on Finding Authoritative Sites for the SERPs

No, Siri, I said ‘find authority pictures–you know what? Nevermind’

Apparently Google looks for authoritative pages the same we you probably already do when doing research:

A patent granted to Google this week focuses upon authoritative search results. It describes how Google might surface authoritative results for queries and for query revisions when there might not results that meet a threshold of authoritativeness for the initial query. Reading through it was like looking at a mirror image of the efforts I usually go through to try to build authoritative results for a search engine to surface.

Very interesting stuff. If you’re feeling particularly perky some morning over coffee, I’d suggest giving this patent a read through. Seems likely that you may gain some insight into how Google frames or approaches authority web pages.

Also, go ahead and click through to read the full text of this article. I’m putting two here, but there are seven “takeaways” from the patent that I recommend becoming familiar with:

1. Google might maintain a “keyword-to-authoritative site database” which it can refer to when someone performs a query.

2. The patent described “Mapping” keywords on pages on the Web as sources of information for that authoritative site database.

Finally, this is all further proof that the best long-term SEO strategy is becoming an authority in your space.

The Problem With (and how to raise) Moz DA

There’s a common misconception I hear frequently from prospects and SEO beginners, so I took the opportunity to cover this article in the weekly update to help clear it up.

Moz’s DA (domain authority) is not a metric Google uses to rank sites. The Domain Authority metric is a proprietary algorithm Moz uses to try and calculate a site’s authority by using some combination of various inputs–most likely links.

Just because your site has a high DA does not mean it will rank well.

Personally, I have found the Ahrefs Domain Rating to be more accurate and more up-to-date, but I guess that’s personal preference.

Here’s another fun fact about Moz’s DA that I don’t think is widely known: it’s very easy to manipulate a site’s DA score with tons of low quality links. Just because the DA score goes up from those crappy links, doesn’t mean Google is going to be impressed and rank your site.

Still, as the article points out:

So, while I think DA is a totally worthless metric (and it is), increasing it means one thing: you are building the right kind of links, and in the end, that is what has the biggest impact on your Google rankings. Here is a simple, yet guaranteed way to increase your website’s Domain Authority before the next update.

Slightly contrary to the point I made above about low quality links (which is true), if you are engaging in high quality link building, you should see your Moz score improve, ideally, and your rankings improve as well.

The rest of this article talks about how to increase your Moz DA score by doing good, wholesome SEO that will help your overall rankings, so… not a bad way to kill 10 minutes by giving it a read.


Getting Traffic From Pinterest

Do you have an interest… in Pinterest?

Good news. Ahrefs have a really long post on generating traffic using Pinterest. Like, if you were looking to kill a few hours learning something new and probably valuable, this isn’t a bad choice.

Much too long an article for a short summary to do it justice, I will just say that if you are into the idea of using Pinterest as a part of your traffic generation strategy, this post literally has everything you’ll need.

Here’s a great tip on connecting with people that are already sharing your content on Pinterest:
